Step Stool

A step stool is just a little ladder or platform that lets you reach stuff that's too high up – usually just one to three steps. They're great for quick jobs and you'll find them all over: houses, offices, shops, you name it.

🔧 What Makes Up a Step Stool?

Steps (Treads):

Most have one to four.

Can be made of metal, plastic, or wood.

Gotta have something grippy so you don't slip!

Frame:

Could be aluminum, steel, plastic, or wood.

This decides how tough it is and how much weight it can hold.

Feet/Base:

Usually have rubber bottoms to keep it from sliding.

Some are wide at the bottom so they don't tip.

Handles/Rails (you don't always see these):

Keeps you steady.

Usually on taller ones.

Folds Up:

A lot of step stools can fold up to save space.

They have hinges or a design that lets them squish down.

Lock (on some):

Stops it from folding up while you're on it.

Normally on folding ones with a few steps.

📏 How Tall Are They?

1-step: Gets you up about half a foot to a foot.

2-step: Bumps you up a foot to a foot and a half.

3-step (or more): Can get you almost three feet higher.

Pick one that gets you high enough without taking up too much room.

🧱 What They're Made Of

Material | What's Good | What's Not
Plastic | Light, won't rust, cheap | Not the strongest for heavy folks
Wood | Looks nice, strong | Kinda heavy, doesn't fold, can give you splinters
Aluminum | Light, doesn't rust, strong | Can cost more
Steel | Super strong, lasts a long time | Heavy, can rust if you don't coat it

⚠️ Stuff to Look for to Stay Safe

No-slip steps

Wide steps so you have good footing

Rubber feet

How much weight it can hold

A handle to hold onto

Locks on the hinges (if it folds)

A stamp that says it's safe (like ANSI or OSHA for work)

🏠 Where You'll See Them

To reach stuff in your kitchen cabinets

To change light bulbs

To wipe down windows or fans

For fixing up your house

So kids can reach the sink

To get to high stuff in your garage

⚖️ How Much Weight Can They Take?

Usually, they can handle 200 to 500 pounds.

Always peek at this first—too much weight and it could break.

🛠️ Kinds of Step Stools

1. Basic:

One or two steps.

Great for kitchens or bathrooms.

2. Folding:

Folds up to store away.

Good if you have little space.

3. Heavy-Duty:

Made extra strong for lots of weight.

For garages or shops.

4. Platform:

Flat surface on top.

For standing for longer, like when painting.

5. With a Handrail:

Keeps you from falling.

Good for older people or folks who can't balance well.

6. Rolling (Kick Stool):

Rolls around, then locks when you stand on it.

You see these in libraries or warehouses.

🧽 How to Keep It Up

Wipe it down so it's not dusty or oily.

Look at the hinges and locks to see if they're wearing out.

Check the rubber feet to make sure they aren't falling apart.

Keep it dry so it doesn't rust or rot (if it's metal or wood).

❌ Don't Do This

Standing on the very top if it's not made for that.

Putting too much weight on it.

Using it on ground that's not flat.

Not locking it before you climb on it.

Using it like a ladder for super-high places.

🧠 Things to Think About Before You Buy

Ask yourself:

How high do I need to reach?

How much weight will it hold?

How often will I use it?

Do I need to stash it in a small area?

Will kids or older people be using it?

🛑 Remember

Don't sit on a step stool if it's not made to be a seat. Always keep three things touching it (two feet and one hand, or two hands and one foot) when you're climbing.
